Extending Drill Bit Life
from Drill Bits Newsletter
Winter 2002
The distance that a rock bit will drill depends on many factors
. Of these, rock bit reconditioning can be the major factor in
the cost and performance of a button bit or carbide insert (
four-point) rock drill bit.
Regular sharpening is essential for maximum bit life. Button
bits are designed for fast penetration, and keeping them sharp
has a direct result on penetration rate as well as longevity.
As button bits wear, they develop flats on the tungsten carbide
buttons. Flats inhibit rock shattering power and force the bits
and (your equipment) to work harder to get the job done. Flats
also greatly increase stress on the buttons, and this stress
is the most frequent cause of button breakage and failure.

Whether at a mine, a construction site, or a quarry, adequate
conditions should exist to meet reconditioning requirements.
This can range from a portable grinder to a complete shop. Proper
tools must be available to do the job. A rock bit grinding machine
must be selected to handle the range and quantity of bits that
are expected to be maintained. Correct grinding wheel sizes,
composition , hardness and inventories must be maintained. Safety
materials such as glasses, gloves, ear protection and other necessary
materials should always be on hand. A well ventilated place with
adequate dust removal should be provided.
Simple, but regular bit sharpening can minimize these problems.
